How do I put my archive links in a menu?

Note: This article is for classic templates. If your blog is using Layouts, this feature is supported as an option by the archive page element. (Select the "dropdown menu" option.)
Archive links are usually just displayed in the sidebar of your blog, as a list of links to all the individual files. However, after you've been blogging for a while this list can get rather long and unwieldy. So some people like to put their archives into a menu, to make them more compact. Here's what it looks like:

This menu doesn't do anything here, of course, but on a real blog, selecting any of the options would automatically take you to the archive page for that month.

To do this on your blog, you'll just replace the default'>http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=97">default archive code with the following:

<select name="archivemenu" onchange= "document.location.href=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;">
<option selected>- Archives -</option>
<BloggerArchives> <option value="<$BlogArchiveURL$>"><$BlogArchiveName$></option> </BloggerArchives>
</select>

The first option, "- Archives -", is just a label that doesn't do anything. You can change this to whatever text you want. When you're done, save your changes and republish. That's all there is to it!
